With the ambitious goal of scaling 1,000 transformative startups by the end of the UN Ocean Decade, the coalition works to regenerate ocean health, mainstream ocean investment, diversify the innovation ecosystem, and amplify the voice of ocean impact innovation globally.

About 1000 Ocean Startups

1000 Ocean Startups (1000OS) is a coalition to accelerate ocean impact innovation. The coalition unites the global ecosystem of incubators, accelerators, competitions, matching platforms and venture capital and corporate venture capital firms supporting start-ups for ocean impact. 1000OS counts 48 members of entrepreneur supporting organization who hold over $2B in assets under management and collectively have supported over 350 ocean health start-ups. The coalition’s vision is to mainstream the ocean impact innovation ecosystem and bring the sector to maturity.

To do so, it holds four key objectives:

The coalition has the mission to scale at least 1,000 transformative start-ups by the end of the UN Ocean Decade to regenerate ocean health and achieve SDG14.

The Lighthouse, or Executive Team of 1000OS, is housed at the World Economic Forum and is responsible for the day-to-day functioning of 1000OS and manages governance, communications, partnerships, fundraising, and working group projects. From time to time, the member organizations may allocate additional staffing to the Lighthouse, as approved by the Steering Committee. This position is allocated to the Lighthouse by OceanHub Africa.

OceanHub Africa is the leading enabler of ocean-impact entrepreneurship in Africa and a founding member and founding Co-Chair of the 1000 Ocean Startups Coalition. Based in Cape Town, it supports, connects, and invests in ventures addressing critical ocean challenges across Africa.

As the host of this role, OceanHub Africa provides the operational base for advancing 1000OS’s mission on the continent.
